Construction of Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory to Begin Next Month, According to Report

The Tesla Shanghai Megafactory is making progress, but there have been some changes to its construction timeline and mass production targets. A recent report from China suggests that the construction of the Shanghai Megafactory is now set to begin in May 2024, and mass production of the grid-scale Megapack battery units is expected to start in Q1 2025, which is slightly later than originally planned. It seems that the Shanghai Megafactory is running a few quarters behind its initial targets, indicating delays in its development.

However, these delays are not entirely unexpected. In December, Tesla China officially launched the Megafactory project in Shanghai, marking the company’s first energy storage plant to be built outside the United States. The facility is projected to produce up to 10,000 Megapacks annually, equivalent to approximately 40 GWh of energy storage.

Furthermore, it is Tesla’s largest electric vehicle plant by raw volume, responsible for producing the company’s mass-market vehicles, the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y crossover. Additionally, Giga Shanghai serves as Tesla’s primary vehicle export hub. This development, as reported by Tesla China and a Chinese publication, indicates a shift in the construction and production timeline for the Tesla Shanghai Megafactory.
