Tesla’s China registrations jump 41% WoW to 13.8k units in the third week of May.

Tesla China recorded 13,800 new vehicle registrations during the week of May 13-19, 2024. Although Tesla does not publicly disclose its weekly sales figures in China, the number of new vehicle registrations serves as an indicator of its performance in the market. These registrations are monitored and shared by industry observers and car companies such as Li Auto. In the previous period from May 1-12, Tesla China was tracked with 16,900 new registrations.

By May 19, 2024, it is estimated that there were a total of 30,800 insurance registrations for Tesla vehicles in China. According to industry experts, Tesla China’s performance this month suggests that their year-to-date 2024 registrations trail behind the same period in 2023 by only 4%. A tweet by Roland Pircher on May 21, 2024, reported 13,800 Tesla insurance registrations in China for the week of May 13-19. The tweet also mentioned a 15.5% increase from the previous quarter and a 13.3% decrease compared to the third quarter of 2023, making it the best quarter after 7 weeks.

Year-to-date figures show a 3.7% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. This performance is indicative of a positive outlook for Tesla China’s domestic sales in May, as the company had sold only 31,421 units in the local Chinese market in April 2024, compared to wholesale numbers of 62,167 units reported by the China Passenger Car Association. Consequently, it is anticipated that Tesla China’s local sales for May will exceed those of April 2024. Furthermore, a Twitter post by AJ stated that Tesla China’s weekly vehicle registrations for May 13-19 showed a significant reduction in the gap from 2023, with only 8,000 vehicles separating the two years as of week 20 in 2024.

The post highlighted that Tesla is only 4% behind in year-to-date 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. In addition to its sales performance, Tesla China initiated a promotion offering existing customers free Supercharging miles when they replace Goodyear tires at a Tesla service center within the next month. This move aims to provide added value to its customer base.
