IONNA EV charging receives regulatory approval for North American market

The joint venture between several automakers and energy companies was announced in July 2023 and is expected to rival Tesla’s Supercharger Network in North America. Despite being viewed as a competitor to Tesla, the new EV charging network, named IONNA, will be accessible to all electric vehicles. In an effort to enhance customer comfort, the charging stations will feature canopies. Additionally, IONNA plans to integrate network functions with participating automakers’ in-vehicle and in-app experiences, allowing customers to make reservations, plan routes, navigate during travel, pay for services, and manage energy needs.

IONNA aims to establish a minimum of 30,000 high-powered charging stations strategically located throughout the United States, with plans to expand into Canada in the future. Seth Cutler, formerly the Senior Vice President of Technical Operations at EV Connect, was appointed as IONNA’s CEO, effective February 1, 2024. In response to his appointment, Cutler expressed his enthusiasm for leading IONNA and working with the partner organizations to shape the future of electric mobility, emphasizing the shared commitment to creating an extensive, high-powered charging network and driving widespread EV adoption.
