Rivian secures substantial incentives for R2 vehicle production in Illinois

Rivian has secured an $827 million incentive package from the State of Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity. This funding will be utilized for the expansion of the R2 production facility in Normal, Illinois. The aim is to enable the company to expedite the launch of production and reduce the necessary capital. This decision will lead to the Normal factory being prepared for R2 production, with the assistance of the significant investment provided by the State of Illinois.

The incentive package is intended to expand the Normal facility, enhance public infrastructure, and offer job training for the Rivian workforce. CEO RJ Scaringe expressed gratitude for the investment from the state and commended Governor Pritzker, President Harmon, and Speaker Welch for their leadership. Scaringe emphasized that having the state’s support will allow Rivian to bring its midsize SUV, R2, to the market quickly, providing consumers with greater EV choices. Rivian’s investment in Normal has exceeded $2 billion, contributing over $3.9 billion to the local economy.

The Georgia plant also remains an important part of the company’s strategy for scaling production of R2 and R3. Rivian’s commitment to its partnership with Illinois and its intention to build upon their success in the region was also emphasized.
