NHTSA recall includes Tesla Cybertruck accelerator pedal issue for unintended acceleration

The Tesla Cybertruck’s acceleration pedal issue, which resulted in a temporary halt in customer deliveries of the all-electric pickup truck, has been listed as a recall by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This recall affects vehicles produced from November 13, 2023, to April 4, 2024. According to the NHTSA Safety Recall Report, the issue is related to the accelerator pedal becoming dislodged and trapped in the interior trim when high force is applied.

This can affect the performance and operation of the pedal, potentially increasing the risk of a collision. The cause of the accelerator pedal issue was traced to an unapproved change that introduced a lubricant (soap) to aid in the component assembly. As a result, residual lubricant reduced the retention of the pad to the pedal.

Tesla became aware of the issue on March 31, 2024, and a decision to recall the affected Cybertrucks was made on April 12, 2024. It is important to note that as of April 15, 2024, no crashes or accidents were believed to have been caused by the issue, and there were no injuries or accidents reported. Unlike most Tesla recalls, the Cybertruck’s accelerator pedal issue is hardware related and requires replacement of the faulty accelerator pedal assembly in affected vehicles.

Vehicles produced from April 17, 2024, already have the new accelerator pedal component, and affected units in delivery centers or in transit will receive the remedy prior to customer handover. Elon Musk’s recent comments and social media posts have suggested that Cybertruck deliveries have resumed following the implementation of the necessary measures to address the accelerator pedal issue. Musk emphasized that the recall was a precautionary measure to ensure safety.
