BYD is testing a PHEV pickup truck in Mexico [Video].

Recently, BYD was seen testing its new hybrid pickup truck in Mexico. The Chinese automaker’s first new energy pickup truck was showcased in a video shared by [source], where it was seen navigating dirt roads, accelerating and stopping on paved roads. Following the rigorous testing in Mexico, it was revealed that the upcoming pickup truck will be a plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV).

As a PHEV, comparisons with fully electric cars like the Tesla Cybertruck or Ford F-150 Lightning would be inappropriate. The new BYD pickup truck will be built on the company’s Dual-Mode Super Hybrid All-Terrain Off-Road platform (DMO). This platform was introduced to complement Fang Cheng Bao, a new professional sub-brand under BYD.

Some Chinese auto experts have noted similarities between the upcoming pickup truck and Fang Cheng Bao’s Bao 5 (Leopard 5) SUV. BYD will equip its hybrid pickup truck with a 31.8 kWh Blade Battery, similar to that of the Leopard 5, which the company claims will redefine EV safety standards. Specifically, Professor Ouyang Minggao of Tsinghua University highlighted the Blade Battery’s advantages in terms of safety and energy density.

Meanwhile, Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis collaborate with BorgWarner.
