Significant Increase in Driverless Ride-Hailing in San Francisco Last Year

Cruise and Alphabet-owned Waymo were the only two companies approved to test driverless ride-hailing operations in San Francisco throughout most of last year. However, in the first quarter of 2023, these companies only drove a combined total of 26,000 driverless miles. This demonstrates the rapid growth of these services in the city over the past year. The data compiled by the San Francisco Chronicle’s Sriharsha Devulapallo provides an insight into Waymo and Cruise’s progress. Despite the limited number of driverless miles, Waymo remains optimistic about the demand for their unique service, stating that they are steadily working through their waitlist in San Francisco. Currently, neither Waymo nor Cruise offer any driverless or ride-hailing operations in the city, but it is anticipated that they will do so in the future.
